Mayorships are calculated based on the number of recent *days* with check-ins to a specific place, so if you check in 12 times in one day, it only counts 1x. We calculate mayorships based on the number of days that you've checked into a place over the past 60 days to keep mayorships current (It’s possible for you to have more check-ins over all time than the current Mayor, but just not as many recent check-ins).

Only users who have uploaded a photo (you can update this on your settings page, just click "edit" next to Account Info) can earn a mayorship. If someone takes your mayorship away, please note that you then need to have two MORE days with check-ins to claim your mayorship back.  The first day to tie and the second to win it back, because you need to have more days total (within the past 60 days) with check-ins.
