In the iPhone app, go to the Me tab (with your name), tap My Settings, then tap through to ''Other Notification Settings.' You’ll see the option to adjust push notifications on your device (left column) and email notifications (right column). You can also tap the phone icon on a friend’s profile page (under his/her profile photo) to turn notifications on/off for an individual user.

In the Android app, tap the drawer tab (3 lines on the top left of your screen) and select 'Settings', and then 'Notification Settings'. You’ll see the option to adjust push notifications on your device (left column) and email notifications (right column).

In the BlackBerry app, go to the Me tab (with your name) and scroll down to Settings > Notification Settings. You can receive push notifications on your device by selecting Yes.

On the web, go to foursquare.com/settings and scroll down to Notifications to adjust push notifications on your device (left column) and email notifications (right column). For example, you can check the box to receive notifications on your device when your friends check in, or you can check the box to receive email notifications when a friend does one of your tips.

If you want to control which friends you'll get notifications for, go to your friend’s profile and look for the ‘Notifications’ drop down menu on the right side of the page.

Select ‘On’ to receive a push notification when your friend checks in somewhere in the same city as you.  Note: you’ll only be notified if you have check-in notifications turned on at foursquare.com/settings/notifications (“When my friends check in”).

Select ‘Off’ if you’d rather not want to receive a push notification when your friend checks in.

Select ‘Always’ to receive a push notification when your friend checks in – even if they are in a different city and you’ve unchecked the “When my friends check in” box at foursquare.com/settings/notifications.
