We want you to enjoy your day, not worry about your phone dying! Having this turned on during the day only increases battery drain by about 0.7 percent per hour or the equivalent to about a 20-minute game of Angry Birds over the course of a day. In addition, we automatically shut down when your battery dips below 30%.
Seeing the location arrow icon (in iOS) in your device's status bar does not mean we use your GPS. In fact, we very rarely use GPS.
We developed these so that you wouldn't miss awesome stuff around you, like the best dish on a menu or the best new places in a new part of town.
In developing these, we focused on two things: making sure the notifications were valuable, and making sure they had only a tiny impact on battery.
Notifications are powered by your phone’s location. Over the past couple years, we’ve fine-tuned, tested, and tweaked them to make sure that you’re getting great information (like the best dish on a menu) right when you need it.
In addition to having these settings enabled in the app itself, you must enable a few settings at the operating system level as well.
Where can I find the settings in the app?
To adjust location settings, navigate to your Profile > Settings > Location Settings and toggle your devices Background Location on.
On iOS, navigate to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and make sure "Location Services" and Foursquare are toggled On. Also, navigate to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and make sure that "Background App Refresh" and Swarm are toggled On.
On Android, navigate to Settings > Apps > Foursquare and be sure that Foursquare has permission to access your location.
